A Medical Spa Success Story
Bal-Tech Medical client serves as example of how business can boom
Dr. Kim Hart was a successful chiropractor in Oklahoma City and his wife Vicky a talented and busy ER physician in the late 1990s.
One day, Vicky turned to Kim and said, “How about we get into the skin care business?”
“I think it was just a matter of being burned out in the ER and us wanting to break off into something together,” Kim said. “So we started researching this and I called Bal-Tech Medical after spotting their website on the Internet.”
After an initial consultation with Bal-Tech Medical, the Harts began to envision what a laser skin-care clinic could do in their community.
“When talking to Rich Balance (Bal-Tech Medical president), I started to realize how lucrative this could be, because he explained to me what a treatment menu could look like and what kind of packages and pricing could be offered,” Kim said.
Because he was new to the skin-care business, Kim said he was “like a sponge” soaking in all of the information he could from Bal-Tech Medical.
“The more I learned, the more I realized that people would seek these treatments,” Kim said.
Less than a year later, in July of 2001, the Harts opened Laser Light Skin Clinic in Oklahoma City. Four years later, they were operating one of the most successful medi-spas in the country.
Bal-Tech Medical has long viewed the Harts’ story as one it wanted to share with current clients and future prospects. Many Bal-Tech Medical clients have spoken to the Harts, or even visited their facility.
Their expertise in business development has provided important information for those just starting in the medical spa industry.
“Kim is a great reference for our Aesthetic Success Program offerings,” Balance said. “His success with his chiropractic practice, and then with Laser Light shows a passion and understanding of the good values and good practices that would greatly help all of our clients.”
Balance said that Harts’ expertise would greatly benefit those medical spas that might not be reaching expected success levels, or would like to take the next step up from current profit levels.
“The first months were slow, as it might be with any business,” Kim said. “But once we developed our logo, our themes, our colors and a marketing plan, it all started to come together.”
“You have to have a passion for doing this, and seeing your patients get good results,” Kim said. “You have to go the extra mile for people, and there is a great deal to be said for educating the public about these treatments and cross-selling when you can.”
The Harts’ medical spa operation has expanded to include a second location in Tulsa, OK, and they continue to do over $200,000 a month in business.
“Kim and Vicky Hart are perfect examples of why we developed Bal-Tech Medical into a full-service medical spa consultation and equipment firm,” Balance said. “I have told all of our clients that the buying of equipment and clinical training at less expense from us is an important service we provide, but of equal, or even more, importance is the marketing, medical spa management and business development expertise we can also offer.”
Kim is pleased with the choices he made during his startup process.
“If I had to do it all over again, I would do it the same way and I would deal with Bal-Tech Medical,” Kim said. “I would recommend that to anyone.”
