A Picture is Still Worth a Thousand Words
The old saying about the power and impact of a photo being worth a thousand words was first utilized in the media world, making a catchphrase out of the obvious – that an excellent photo would garner more attention than the story behind the photo.
The same holds true for those in the medical spa or skin-care industry. Nothing speaks to the patient more effectively than before-and-after photos related to a treatment they are considering, or are in the process of undergoing.
“The before-and-after photo has traditionally been an effective tool in the weight-loss industry and throughout the history of plastic surgery,” Bal-Tech Medical president Rich Balance said. “But it has more recently become a critical aspect of a medical spa operation. It is a sales tool that says more than those thousand words of explanation and education during a consult.”
But beyond the traditional before-and-after photos, photography and imaging equipment has become a key tool during the consult with ultraviolet imagery capabilities that help clinicians diagnose problem areas for a patient.
“These images really produce some dramatic detail that is invaluable in assessing the condition of the patient’s skin,” Balance said.
A system like the Profect™ Studio Photography System makes it easier for the clinician and patient to view and understand potential conditions such as solar and actinic keratoses, melasma, dyschromia, lentigo, vitiligo, among others.
The software, base stations and “daylight” lighting kits available with these systems makes for a professional presentation, which helps you document patient history and, ultimately, sell more procedures during consults.
Balance said before-and-after photos obviously can’t replace the important verbage and understanding of a consent form, but they help the patient visualize what has occurred in other patients undergoing the same treatment.
“Photos have been easy to relate to for all us,” Balance said. “We can see a condition that may be present on our own skin, and then look at photos that show a similar condition and how it was resolved over time.”
